Ciara Mageean is buried in Portaferry, County Down. The Irish cyclist died of bowel cancer at age 34. She was the 2024 European 1500m gold medalist and an Olympian who competed in Rio and Tokyo. Her burial concludes a public mourning period that drew hundreds to her hometown.

Mageean was diagnosed with bowel cancer shortly after her athletic peak. She married Thomas Mageean one week before her death. The couple’s wedding took place during her final month of life. Her passing prompted an immediate outpouring of online tributes from athletes and fans across Ireland and Europe.

Funeral services were held at St Patrick's Church near her home in Portaferry. President Connolly and the Taoiseach sent their aides-de-camp to represent them. Fr Martin Kelly, who knew Mageean for years, led the mass. He described her husband Thomas as the love of her life.

Fr Kelly read a comment from a mourner who called Mageean a truly remarkable and inspirational human being. The tribute noted her courage and infectious smile touched hearts beyond athletics. Kelly shared details from his last visit with her at the Marie Curie Hospice in Belfast.

During that visit, Mageean discussed acceptance and the difficulty of her condition. She spoke about trusting the love from her husband, family, and colleagues. Kelly said he told her that this love was how God was cherishing her at that time in her life.

The priest and the cyclist took a walk around the hospice grounds. When Mageean suggested another lap, Kelly’s face indicated he could not keep up. She walked him back to the hospice. Kelly said he hoped she would continue to link people on their journeys through life.

The service marked the final step in Mageean’s public farewell. Her athletic career spanned two Olympic Games and a gold medal in Rome in 2024. Her family and community now mourn her in private after the public observances.
