Ireland head coach Andy Farrell confirmed the starting fifteen to face Argentina on Friday night at the Aviva Stadium. The team announcement arrived at approximately 2 p.m. local time, setting the lineup for the first European leg of the Nations Championship fixtures. The match is scheduled for 8:10 p.m.
Craig Casey will start at scrumhalf, a selection that places Jamison Gibson-Park on the bench. Sam Prendergast is fit to start at outhalf, taking preference over Ciarán Frawley. In the backrow, Nick Timoney starts ahead of Peter O'Mahony and Schalk van der Merwe, with the latter named on the replacement bench alongside Sam Illo.
Gordon D'Arcy noted that Irish rugby relies on collective effort rather than individual tactical brilliance. "It has never really been about tactics or a clever play for Ireland. It has been about collective performance, and that starts with individuals," D'Arcy said. He emphasized that every player in the squad carries equal responsibility, regardless of playing time.
Gerry Thornley predicted that Andrew Porter, Ryan Baird, and Mack Hansen could return to the starting lineup after missing the Six Nations Championship and the southern Nations series. All three missed last year's autumn series finale, a 24-13 loss to South Africa, due to calf issues, leg fractures, and foot surgery respectively. Their return to form this season has made them strong candidates for Farrell's selection.
Argentina named its squad earlier in the day, making 12 changes from the side that drew with Australia. The Pumas will be led by Julian Montoya, with Juan Martin Gonzalez, Marcos Kremer, and Pablo Matera starting in the front row. The Argentine lineup includes Felipe Contepomi, whom D'Arcy described as having a clear plan for the match.
The Ireland starting lineup is as follows: Keenan; Baloucoune, Henshaw, McCloskey, Hansen; Prendergast, Casey; Porter, Sheehan, Furlong, McCarthy, Beirne, Baird, Timoney, Jansen. The replacement bench includes Kelleher, O'Toole, Illo, Ryan, van der Flier, Gibson-Park, Frawley, and Aki.
Argentina's starting lineup consists of Juan Cruz Mallia; Bautista Delguy, Justo Piccardo, Santiago Chocobares, Mateo Carreras; Tomas Albornoz, Gonzalo Garcia; Boris Wenger, Julian Montoya, Francisco Morena; Guido Petti, Pedro Rubiolo; Juan Martin Gonzalez, Marcos Kremer, Pablo Matera. Their replacements are Leonel Oviedo, Mayco Vivas, Joel Sclavi, Efrain Elias, Juan Martin Scelzo, Simon Benitez Cruz, Geronimo Prisciantelli, and Lucio Cinti.
