Bauer Media Group returned to its offices in Dublin on Friday morning after being evacuated due to a bomb threat. The company resumed normal operations following a review by local law enforcement.
The threat was part of a coordinated wave of alerts sent to multiple media organizations in Ireland and the United Kingdom on Friday morning. RTÉ, Bauer Media, and Mediahus were all advised to leave their buildings via email. Mediahus publishes newspapers such as The Irish Independent.
RTÉ staff remained outside the campus for a time while authorities assessed the situation. Claire Byrne, an RTÉ presenter, addressed the disruption when she returned to broadcast. She stated that the organization was advised to leave the building based on a received message.
Byrne said the station contacted the Garda Síochána, the Irish national police service. She added that all staff had departed and they were later told the warning was a hoax. She apologized for the broadcast interruption before continuing with her scheduled interview.
It is unclear if Virgin Media was fully evacuated, though it reportedly received a similar threat. An Garda Síochána statement confirmed the force is aware of threats made against media organizations in Ireland and Europe. The police are investigating the incidents and liaising with affected companies.
These alerts followed a busy day for Irish aviation. An Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome was diverted to France after a bomb threat on Thursday. A total of 21 flights were impacted by threats yesterday, with seven other flights receiving warnings earlier in the week.
