Patrick O’Donovan is currently receiving treatment at University Hospital Limerick after falling ill at his home. The Limerick Fine Gael TD was transported to the hospital on Thursday night and remained there for care on Friday. O’Donovan, 49, holds the position of minister without portfolio after his previous duties were transferred to colleague Peter Burke.
This is the second time in less than a month that the politician has required hospitalization at UHL. O’Donovan had been recuperating at home following a previous discharge. He initially suffered a medical emergency on October 13 while hosting a meeting of European Union Telecommunications Ministers at the University of Limerick.
Tánaiste Simon Harris spoke with O’Donovan on Friday. Harris stated that the minister was in good spirits and that medical staff were working to adjust his treatment. Harris said he would avoid providing a running commentary on O’Donovan’s health out of respect, noting that the minister is on leave for medical reasons.
Harris addressed reporters in Cork ahead of the Fine Gael ardfheis on Friday. He noted that O’Donovan’s family previously indicated that new treatment would require time. Harris explained that the treatment process may involve periodic observations or medical care from time to time. He described the current hospitalization as part of that ongoing treatment plan.
O’Donovan was consulted regarding the selection of the person to take over his ministerial portfolio during his sick leave. A spokesperson for the minister told journalists earlier this week that his return to work would be guided by medical advice. The office was contacted for comment on Friday regarding the latest admission to the hospital.
