Liam Nolan of Galway finished the first round of the HotelPlanner Tour Grand Final on Wednesday at two under par. His score of 70 placed him in a tie for 23rd position in the 45-player field at Club de Golf Alcanada in Mallorca. The result keeps him within striking distance of the 15 DP World Tour cards available from the event.
Nolan began the round with birdies on the first two holes. He then struggled on the seventh and eighth holes, where he recorded a bogey followed by a double bogey. That sequence left him with a 37 on the opening nine.
He recovered on the back nine, recording birdies on the 12th, 13th, 15th, and 17th holes. A final bogey on the 18th hole ended his day at two under par. Spain’s Joseba Torres leads the field after a seven-under-par 65. John Catlin of the United States and Julien Sale of France follow one shot behind on six under.
Nolan is currently projected to finish in 13th place if his score holds. A finish in that position would secure a tour card in his second full season as a professional. A top-seven finish would guarantee him a card regardless of other results. The Grand Final offers substantial points to the participants.
In separate LPGA Tour action in Malaysia, Leona Maguire sat at level par after the first round. She trailed leader Pauline Roussin-Bouchard by eight shots. Lauren Walsh recorded a three-over-par 75.
