Ohio State football faces Oregon on Friday at Ohio Stadium with its postseason hopes hanging by a thread after a recent drop in national rankings.

The Buckeyes entered the week ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press poll and 12th in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday night. This marks a steep decline from their No. 2 position the previous week. The slide occurred after the team suffered a 30-18 loss to the University of Southern California last week.

The timing of the defeat proved problematic for the program. The College Football Playoff committee’s first official rankings placed the Buckeyes at No. 12. This position is effectively outside the initial playoff field because a team from a Group of 5 conference holds an automatic bid. Head coach Ryan Day and the players view the upcoming schedule as a series of must-win games to secure a spot in the postseason.

Players have identified a lack of effort as a primary issue in the loss to the Trojans. Safety Jaylen McClain raised concerns about intensity during postgame interviews in Los Angeles. Linebacker Christian Alliegro confirmed these observations during film review sessions on Sunday. The team believes the performance against USC, a program that was also fighting for playoff survival, exposed mental lapses that must be corrected.

Junior linebacker and team captain Payton Pierce described the current mindset as one of high urgency. He stated that the team cannot afford another loss. Pierce said, “It’s pretty much playoff time now for us cuz we can’t lose. And so there’s a sense of urgency, and intensity, and focus.” He noted that the message from the coaching staff is to leave everything on the field without holding back.

Running back Isaiah West echoed this sentiment, describing the atmosphere in the building as heavy but confident. West said, “The playoffs have started early for us. If we win, we continue. If we lose, we put ourselves in a really bad spot, so the sense of urgency is at an all-time high.” The team is aware that a loss to Oregon could jeopardize their chances against upcoming opponents like Northwestern, Nebraska, and Michigan.

The opponent presents a unique challenge. Oregon has lost three games this season despite a roster that was ranked No. 2 at the start of the year. The Ducks currently sit at No. 23 in the CFP rankings but are outside the AP Top 25. They showed resilience last week by rallying to defeat Northwestern. Day acknowledged that his team must learn from the USC game to avoid regret, emphasizing that leaders must relay the message of what is at stake.

Day has previously guided the team through similar slumps. Two years ago, the Buckeyes rebounded from a 13-10 loss to Michigan by focusing on mental preparation. That adjustment led to a four-game winning streak and a trip to the College Football Playoff National Championship. The team will look to apply that same approach this week as it prepares for kickoff.
