The Cleveland Browns travel to Pittsburgh on Sunday to face the Steelers in a game that could determine the top spot in the AFC North. The Browns enter the matchup with a 5-2 record, a start that has surprised many observers and shifted the mood around the franchise. A victory would give Cleveland sole possession of first place in the division and mark the first time they have swept the Steelers in a season since 1988.
The team’s turnaround began with the arrival of first-year head coach Todd Monken. Monken had previous ties to the organization, serving as offensive coordinator in 2019. He then spent the 2023 through 2025 seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, a role that required him to study the Browns twice a year. Monken stated that he did not accept the traditional negative views of the team, declaring that these Browns are different.
Columbus-based sports commentator Terry Pluto noted the change in culture since Monken took over. He pointed to the team’s recent ability to win close contests. The Browns have recorded five winning drives in the fourth quarter this season. Pluto said that after two seasons with an 8-26 record, the team had found every possible way to lose. Now that they are winning, he advised fans to enjoy the moment rather than dwelling on past failures.
A key factor in the recent success has been the performance of quarterback Deshaun Watson. Monken made the decision to start Watson, a move that raised questions due to Watson’s injury history and prior legal issues. Pluto, who initially preferred to see Shedeur Sanders at the position, acknowledged that Watson is playing at his best level since 2023. He cited Watson’s performance against Tennessee on Sunday as the best he has looked in several years.
The team’s kicker, Andre Szmyt, has also been a critical contributor. He has made three game-winning field goals this season. Pluto described Szmyt as an unsung hero, noting that in previous years, a missed kick in a close game would have sealed a loss. The defense has also played a role in these victories, while young offensive talent has begun to show impact.
Pluto highlighted the contributions of rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston. He also credited general manager Andrew Berry with improved drafting. Berry had more draft capital to work with after Cleveland traded three first-round selections and other picks to acquire Watson. Despite these gains, the offensive line remains an area under development. Monken has described the team as being under construction, a phrase he prefers to the term work in progress.
The upcoming game against Pittsburgh is viewed as a major test for the Browns. Pluto called the matchup gigantic in importance. He noted that winning against a division rival twice in a single season would build confidence for the team. While a loss would not be catastrophic, a win would solidify the team’s standing in the AFC North and mark a significant step in their ongoing development.
