Tampa Bay is not done yet.
The Rays trailed by a run entering the bottom of the 12th on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. Cooper Pratt had homered off Ian Seymour in the top of the inning to put Milwaukee ahead 3-2, his fourth hit of the game. Milwaukee was one out from a sweep and its first World Series title.
The rally started with an error. Joey Ortiz threw wide on Junior Caminero's leadoff grounder against Antonio Senzatela, and Caminero reached. Liam Hicks singled off Shane Drohan, who was making his first appearance since Oct. 15. Jonny DeLuca singled to center to bring home pinch-runner Cedric Mullins and tie it at 3. Chandler Simpson's single loaded the bases, and Milwaukee put five infielders in with the infield drawn in.
Ben Williamson, who entered the at-bat 1 for 15 in the postseason, batted for Victor Mesa Jr. He hit a chopper over first baseman Jake Bauers into right field, and two runs scored to make it 4-3. "That was totally what I told him to do," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "Pretty big swing. I've got to go back and recall everything that took place."
Tampa Bay became the fourth team in World Series history to avoid elimination with an extra-inning comeback, according to OptaSTATS. The first three won the title: the 1912 Red Sox, the 1986 Mets and the 2011 Cardinals. Tampa Bay also became the fifth of 26 teams to win Game 4 after trailing 3-0 in the World Series. The previous four lost Game 5.
The game turned on several earlier swings. Simpson hit an RBI double off Dustin May in the second. Milwaukee tied it in the fourth when Sal Frelick singled with two outs and scored on Pratt's double. Griffin Jax then allowed David Hamilton's two-run blast in the fifth. Caminero singled to start the bottom of the fifth, reached third on an error and scored when DeLuca's grounder was thrown past Jake Bauers by Hamilton.
Caminero left the game with an ailing left foot, and Cedric Mullins replaced him at third base. "He'll play tomorrow on one leg. I'll make sure of it," Cash said. Caminero said he will start Wednesday.
Game 5 in the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. Jacob Misiorowski, the NL Cy Young Award favorite, is set to start for Milwaukee. Cash said he had not named a starter. The announced crowd Tuesday was 40,514. Milwaukee's eight-game winning streak ended with the loss, and the Brewers remain one win from their first championship.
