Eighteen points separated the final scoreline, but the real story was the control Edendork exerted over Clonduff in the Ulster Senior Football Championship preliminary round. The Tyrone side won 0-17 to 0-12 at Pairc Esler in Newry, securing a spot in the next round against Antrim champions St Brigid’s. The match ended with Edendork holding a seven-point lead, a margin they maintained from the third quarter onward.
Edendork’s midfield dominance was the decisive factor. Conn Kilpatrick, who received an All-Star award the previous Friday, led the midfield unit. His high press disrupted Clonduff’s kickouts, preventing the Down team from moving the ball forward effectively. Clonduff created 15 scoring chances in the first half but converted only five. Their inability to clear possession under pressure left them chasing the game for most of the contest.
Darren McCurry, described as a razor-sharp attacker, was the standout performer for Edendork. He scored four points and two goals in the match. His first two-pointer, struck in the sixth minute, helped establish early momentum. He added another two-pointer in the second half to extend the lead. John McLernon also contributed two points, including one scored after a clever dummy. Niall Morgan, the goalkeeper, added two points from frees and a two-pointer when he was unmarked near the end of the first half.
Clonduff struggled to find consistency in their attack. Stephen McConville converted a free in the first half to keep the deficit at four points. Later, he fired over another point to make the game a six-point contest. However, his teammates missed several opportunities in front of goal. Barry O’Hagan and Senan Carr scored late points for Clonduff, but Edendork’s defense held firm. Patrick McLernon scored the final point for Edendork to seal the victory.
The context of the match highlighted Edendork’s readiness. They had just celebrated a Tyrone county title the previous weekend, yet they showed no signs of fatigue or nerves. The team wore green and yellow stripes, while Clonduff played in white to avoid a color clash. Edendork’s captain, Kilpatrick, controlled the tempo throughout the game. The Tyrone side picked their passes carefully, allowing them to dictate the flow of play against a frustrated Clonduff team that could not maintain possession long enough to build attacks.
The match concluded with Edendork maintaining their composure. They managed the final minutes without conceding pressure, ensuring the seven-point lead remained intact. Clonduff’s efforts in the closing stages, including two points from Senan Carr and one from Barry O’Hagan, were not enough to bridge the gap. Edendork will now prepare for their match in Omagh next weekend, where they will face St Brigid’s. The victory serves as a confident start to their campaign against a team that has shown form in recent competitions.
