The Sharks defeated Munster 15 to 3 at Thomond Park on Saturday evening, securing their first win in Limerick.
The South African side recorded their second victory in Ireland in 13 visits and their third win on the current European tour. They also took their fourth win of the overall campaign. The match was played in wet conditions that affected both teams, though the Sharks managed the ball more effectively.
Munster coach Clayton McMillan stated that the team felt they did not position themselves to win. He noted that the previous four games had offered clearer paths to victory. Munster finished the season's opening five games with one win, one draw, and three losses. They will enter the November break with a young squad and several players on the injured sideline.
Ten players on the Munster side were aged 23 or under. The Sharks roster included 10 Springbok internationals. McMillan said the team had acquitted itself well given the circumstances. He added that the break is timely but that the squad still has work to do to improve.
Zekhethelo Siyaya, a 19-year-old fullback for the Sharks, played a key role in the opening score. He broke from deep and chipped the ball over the defense. The bounce deceived Munster players JJ Hanrahan and Ben O'Connor. Halfback Gianni Lombard caught the ball and scored the try in the 14th minute. Lombard missed the conversion attempt.
Munster held 61 per cent of possession in the first half. Despite this advantage, they struggled with handling errors in the wet weather. Several promising penalty positions in the corner were lost due to cheap turnovers. The Sharks looked sharper in attack, particularly when Siyaya was in possession. Siyaya attempted another chip in the 24th minute but knocked the ball off his thigh. Munster scrumhalf Ben O'Donovan collected the loose ball.
Munster reduced the gap to three points at halftime. JJ Hanrahan kicked a penalty just before the break to make the score 5 to 3. The second quarter remained tight, with both sides trading possession. Kieran Brookes for Munster and Ox Nche for the Sharks engaged in a physical battle at the scrum. Nche received a yellow card in the 57th minute for a high tackle on Jeremy Loughman.
The Sharks extended their lead while playing with 14 men. Emile van Heerden stole a lineout ball thrown by Lee Barron. Nick Hatton broke through the defense but was stopped by Ben O'Connor. Replacement forward Ivan van Zyl scored the try in the right corner in the 59th minute. Lombard converted the kick to make the final score 15 to 3.
Munster had ample possession in the final quarter to mount a comeback. They sought a losing bonus point but lacked the accuracy to threaten the Sharks' defense. The introduction of Charlie O'Shea added drive to the Munster play, but they could not find a way into the try line. The Sharks completed the match with their fourth win of the season.
The defeat leaves Munster with a challenging schedule ahead. They will face nine consecutive games after the break. McMillan acknowledged that the team needs to regroup. The Sharks return to Durban having demonstrated strong performance in difficult conditions.
