Marcella's at 615 N. High St. has been named the best happy hour spot in The Lantern's 2026 Best of OSU special edition. The restaurant received 437 votes from Ohio State students and community members. It competes with other venues in the Short North Arts District for this title.
The establishment offers half-priced cocktails, appetizers, soups, salads, and pizzas from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Select wines cost $9 or less per glass during this window. Emily Dunlevie, a front-of-house manager, said the happy hour has been a cornerstone of the business since it opened 20 years ago.
Dunlevie stated that the menu focuses on food as much as drinks. The restaurant is known for a signature shareable meatball covered in brioche breadcrumbs. This item helps distinguish the Italian dining option from other local restaurants. Dunlevie said the balance of food and drink attracts a loyal customer base, particularly college students.
Giana Giordano, a fourth-year nursing student, first heard about the deals during sorority recruitment as a freshman. She said older students recommended the spot for its pricing. Since then, she has visited with friends regularly. Giordano noted that the cozy, dark atmosphere appeals to her. She also said the food quality is strong compared to other happy hour locations in Columbus.
Giordano said the discounts extend beyond beverages, unlike many competitors that only offer minor drink reductions. She found it helpful to dress up for a nice meal while paying half price. This arrangement makes dining more affordable for students balancing classes and jobs. She has celebrated multiple birthdays at the restaurant, which she said keeps her and her friends returning.
Dunlevie said the restaurant completed renovations in 2025. The update included a new cocktail menu featuring an Italian-inspired Venetian margarita and additional spritz options. The goal was to preserve the familiar atmosphere that longtime customers expect. Popular cocktails include the espresso martini and strawberry balsamic martini. On busy Thursdays and Fridays, bartenders may prepare 17 to 25 drinks at a time.
Dunlevie said Ohio State students make up a noticeable portion of the happy hour crowd, especially on weekend evenings. She enjoys seeing the community they bring to the restaurant. She described the award as a huge honor given the number of dining options in Columbus. The recognition validates the team's daily effort to provide genuine hospitality.
