Biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy conceded the Ohio gubernatorial race at 11:05 p.m. on Tuesday, marking the first major loss for the Republican Party in the state’s top executive office. He addressed a small audience at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Columbus, acknowledging the difficulty of the result.
Ramaswamy described the contest as bitter in both directions. He stated that he had called Democratic governor-elect Amy Acton to congratulate her via voicemail shortly before his concession speech. He urged his supporters to root for the success of the state and Acton’s administration.
The Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator, Sherrod Brown, won the Ohio Senate seat. The Associated Press called the race for Brown around the same time Ramaswamy spoke. Incumbent Senator Jon Husted delivered his concession remarks immediately after Ramaswamy finished.
Husted spoke while visibly emotional, describing America as a great nation that citizens should fight for. He emphasized that rights belong to the people rather than the government. He told the crowd to love Ohio and America and to treat neighbors with care.
Husted wished Brown well, advising that candidates should win with humility and gratitude while losing with grace and dignity. He ended his remarks by expressing hope for the future despite the current political climate.
As of 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, most statewide executive races remained too close to call definitively. However, the majority of those contests trended toward Democratic candidates. The Ohio Republican Party is projected to lose at least two seats in the Ohio Senate.
In the Ohio House, Republicans are expected to lose as many as 12 seats. These losses would reduce the majority margin in that chamber to a much slimmer count, reflecting a broader shift in the state’s political balance.
