The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series. The victory extends the Brewers' postseason winning streak to seven consecutive games. The team is now one win away from becoming the first in Major League Baseball history to go 8-0 through the National League Championship Series and World Series.
Milwaukee recorded 16 hits in the game, while Tampa Bay managed only three. The Rays scored their lone run in the ninth inning after already falling behind by eight runs. Through the first eight innings, the Rays had recorded one hit and no runs. The Brewers had previously gone 7-0 in the NLCS and the first three games of the World Series. Only the 1976 Cincinnati Reds swept the final two rounds, though that team played a shorter five-game NLCS.
Jackson Chourio, age 22, was the primary offensive force for Milwaukee. He led off the game with a line drive single and collected singles in his next two at-bats. His fourth at-bat produced a double during an eight-run fifth inning. Chourio finished with four hits, two runs, and one RBI in five innings. His double was the weakest of his four hits, exiting the bat at 99 mph, while speeds of 95 mph or higher are considered hard-hit balls. He also stole a base during the game.
Chourio became the youngest player with a four-hit World Series game since Joe Garagiola in 1946. He has now hit 8 for 14 in the World Series, giving him a .571 batting average. He has two home runs and three stolen bases in the postseason. In Game 2, he threw out a runner at home plate to secure a defensive play. The player is signed with the Brewers through the 2031 season, with two club options extending his contract to 2033.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy noted that the team is not surprised by Chourio's performance. "Nobody's surprised that Jack Jack's doing this. Nobody's surprised. He's turning into a fine player," Murphy said. Murphy compared Chourio's work ethic to that of Kobe Bryant, stating that Chourio is on a similar track for improvement and discipline. Murphy added that Chourio is a "total player" who has played incredible defense.
Chourio said he approached each at-bat with the mindset that it could be his last. "I was just taking every at-bat like it could be my last and trying to find any way I could to get on base," Chourio said. He noted that his goal was to get on base to allow teammates behind him to score. He finished the season with 4.9 WAR despite injury limiting him to 127 games.
The Rays had their best offensive moment in the first inning of Game 2, scoring four runs. They failed to score in the remaining innings of that game, which they lost 5-4. They have not scored since that point. The series continues with Game 4, where the Brewers can complete a perfect 8-0 postseason run.
Robert Gasser started for the Brewers in Game 3. The team also utilized veterans like Jake Bauers, who contributed to the offensive output. The Brewers' organizational depth allowed them to maintain pressure throughout the game, resulting in the decisive margin of victory.
