Brazil’s Foreign Ministry summoned Argentina’s top diplomat in Brasília on Thursday to demand answers regarding the flight of Flavio Bolsonaro to the United States. Sources inside the government told Reuters that the call was made to address the circumstances of the right wing candidate’s departure from South America. Bolsonaro fled the country after losing Sunday’s presidential election to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The Brazilian government stated that Bolsonaro was ordered to remain in the country and surrender his passports as part of an ongoing legal case. He faces a multimillion dollar investigation into a money laundering scheme known as the Banco Master scandal. Investigators are probing a payment from Daniel Vorcaro, the former head of Banco Master, which Bolsonaro allegedly received to finance a film about his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. The senator has denied any wrongdoing and called the case politically motivated.

Argentina’s Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno denied on social media that his government received a formal request for explanations. This denial complicates the diplomatic exchange between the two nations. The dispute threatens to strain relations between Lula and his Argentinian counterpart, libertarian President Javier Milei. Relations have been tense since Milei took office in 2023, with the countries recalling their ambassadors in August after a series of public disagreements.

Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday and declared himself the legitimate president elect of Brazil. He refused to concede the race, in which he fell short of Lula by more than 4 million votes. Lula won with 51.8 percent of the vote, securing a historic fourth non consecutive term. The Liberal Party acknowledged Lula’s victory, but Bolsonaro continued to allege electoral malfeasance. He pointed to a Supreme Court decision that extended voting hours on Sunday as a disadvantage to right wing strongholds.

Both campaigns requested extensions for different reasons. Bolsonaro’s camp cited inclement weather delaying voters, while Lula’s party raised concerns about restrictions on public transport. Bolsonaro argued the last minute extension hurt his base. His claim of a rigged election gained attention when US President Donald Trump also suggested the vote was rigged, though he declined to take sides immediately after the result.

The journey from Brazil to the United States involved a route through northern Argentina. Bolsonaro, his wife, and two daughters boarded a chartered aircraft that passed through Ecuador. Milei has been openly supportive of the Bolsonaro family, and the senator later thanked the Argentinian leader for his assistance. A spokesperson for Milei described the journey as a rescue, saying Bolsonaro escaped from the claws of communism, which seeks to imprison all opposition figures.

Trump has previously issued sanctions and tariffs in response to the prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro. The former Brazilian president was convicted in 2024 of plotting a coup to prevent Lula from taking power after denying his defeat in 2022. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison. The current diplomatic friction adds another layer to the complex legal and political challenges facing the Bolsonaro family in the wake of the election.
