Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out at Anfield. The match finished 1-1 after normal time, with Cody Gakpo scoring for Liverpool in the 43rd minute and Morgan Rogers scoring for Chelsea in the 40th minute.
The shoot-out marked the fifth time the two clubs have met in a penalty decider, with Liverpool winning all five. Chelsea's Wesley Fofana shot high into the Kop during the shoot-out. Liverpool's Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch also missed their attempts, as did Chelsea's Valentin Barco.
Chelsea's Emmanuel Emegha had a chance to win the tie, but Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili saved his effort. Mamardashvili also stopped a close-range header from Liverpool's Ronald Araujo and a low shot from Bradley Barcola during the match.
Both penalties in regular time were awarded within four minutes of each other. Referee Darren England gave a spot-kick to Chelsea after Ryan Gravenberch clipped Moises Caicedo. Rogers converted that penalty. Liverpool was awarded a penalty shortly after when the ball struck a Chelsea defender's raised hand during a corner, and Gakpo scored from the spot.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola made seven changes from his team's Sunday win over Brighton. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, returning to Anfield, started without the injured Joao Pedro and the suspended Cole Palmer. Alonso deployed Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, another former Liverpool player, in the attack.
Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola entered the game for Liverpool in the 59th minute. Chelsea's Mike Penders saved a header from Araujo and a shot from Barcola. Liverpool's Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Marco Palestra late in the match.
The quarter-final draw paired Liverpool with Bournemouth. Manchester City defeated Brighton 4-5 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Sunderland beat Brentford 3-2, Fulham won at Craven Cottage, and Bournemouth defeated Aston Villa 3-0.
Bradford will play at Manchester City, Sunderland travels to Crystal Palace, and Fleetwood Town hosts the winner of the Everton and Newcastle match.
