The Atlanta Falcons arrived in Madrid on Wednesday, stepping off their flight into a cold that required hoodies and sweatpants. The air was crisp, but the lack of rain offered a reprieve from the heavy downpour that accompanied a 16-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just one week prior.
The team will spend the week in Spain before facing the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. EST. The game will take place at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, a venue known for its intense atmosphere. The Falcons currently hold a 3-5 record, while the Bengals are 5-2.
The primary challenge for Atlanta lies in stopping the Bengals' passing attack. Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins have each been targeted 61 times this season. Both players have caught 43 passes, and together they possess more receiving yards than any other pair in the National Football League.
Falcons safety Xavier Watts acknowledged the difficulty of the task. He noted that the duo has had a good year and that the Falcons have seen a bit of a change in how they operate. Watts said he hopes the team can make a different game plan and work together to find explosive solutions on defense.
The Falcons' rushing offense has struggled to find rhythm. The team averaged 42.7 rushing yards per game in their first four contests. That number has dropped to 38.5 yards per game in the last two outings. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. noted that the team has not had the same consistency in the run game as it did earlier in the season.
Robinson stated that the team knows it needs to improve. He said the group has to do a better job coming out of the gate and that they are working to get back to basics. He expressed confidence that the team can turn the corner and perform at a higher level in the upcoming week.
Defensive end James Pearce Jr. returned to full practice for the first time since suffering a knee injury in May. He had been dealing with a knee issue and was previously on the injured reserve list. Pearce said he is in a good spot and feels ready to play. He described his return as a positive step for the team.
The Falcons' injury list includes defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. and wide receiver Beaux Collins, both of whom are listed as full participants due to hamstring and hip issues, respectively. Defensive end James Pearce Jr. is also listed as a full participant, though his status is noted as other rather than injury-related. Offensive tackle Cameron Williams is listed as a full participant with an ankle injury.
Limited participants include linebacker Yasir Abdullah, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, and linebacker Divine Deablo, who has a forearm issue. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. is also a limited participant with a hamstring problem. Wide receiver Zachariah Branch did not participate in practice due to a hamstring injury.
The team will remain in Madrid through the weekend, using the time to prepare for the trip across the Atlantic. The Falcons will face the Bengals in a game that could serve as a turning point for their season.
