Fiosrú opens probe into death of man at Kildare Garda Station
A man in his 30s died in custody Saturday; the police ombudsman is conducting an independent review.

The Office of the Police Ombudsman, known as Fiosrú, has launched an investigation into the death of a man in police custody in County Kildare. The incident occurred at Kildare Garda Station on Saturday morning. The man was in his 30s when he was found unresponsive at the station.
The man was discovered at approximately 9:35 a.m. Gardaí provided medical assistance at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead. The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified of the death. The Garda Síochána stated that the force is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Under Irish law, incidents involving the death of a member of the public in contact with gardaí must be referred to Fiosrú. The agency confirmed that the referral resulted from an incident in County Kildare. Investigators from Fiosrú attended the scene to begin their independent review.
A spokesperson for Fiosrú clarified that a referral does not automatically mean a garda has been accused of wrongdoing. Instead, it triggers an independent investigation to determine whether an act or omission by a garda may have resulted in the death or serious harm to the person. The agency noted that its investigations cover incidents where a member of the public dies or is seriously injured while in contact with gardaí.
Fiosrú stated that its investigation is ongoing. The agency said it could not provide further comment while the live investigation continues. The Gardaí and Fiosrú are working within their respective legal mandates to review the events of Saturday morning at the Kildare station.
