JetBlue has increased its checked baggage fees for the second time in 2026, a move that raises costs for travelers just before the peak holiday season. The new rates apply to tickets purchased on or after Nov. 3.

Economy passengers flying within the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean will now pay at least $50 each way for their first checked bag. This is an increase from the previous rate of $39. During peak travel periods, which include Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, the cost rises to $55 if payment is made at least 24 hours before departure. Passengers who wait until the final 24 hours will pay $60 during off-peak times and $70 during peak periods.

The airline stated that the adjustments are intended to offset rising fuel and operating expenses. JetBlue explained that the changes help maintain competitive base fares while allowing customers to choose whether to pay for checked luggage. The company also increased fees for a second checked bag, which now starts at $70 each way during off-peak periods and $75 during peak times. Airport check-in fees for a second bag can reach $85.

Fuel costs have driven these price changes. JetBlue reported that its average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% increase from the same period last year. The airline expects that figure to climb to $4.64 per gallon in the fourth quarter, representing an 85% year-over-year increase.

The surge in fuel prices follows the start of the Iran war in late February, which involved U.S. and Israeli strikes. The conflict has remained unresolved, restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil supplies. This disruption has kept jet fuel prices elevated across the industry.

JetBlue first raised its baggage fees in March, a move that prompted similar increases from Delta, United, American, and Southwest. During the airline's third-quarter earnings call last week, executives noted that demand remained strong despite higher fares. The airline, which operates its flagship terminal at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, said that some travelers can still check bags for free. This benefit extends to eligible co-branded credit card holders and members of JetBlue's loyalty program.
