Leinster Rugby has confirmed Noel McNamara as its new head coach, ending the search for a successor to Leo Cullen. The 43-year-old takes over the role from the province's academy, where he served as manager for two seasons and previously coached the under-18 and under-19 teams.
The decision reflects a pattern of selecting internal candidates with specific profiles for the role. Leinster CEO Shane Nolan, Guy Easterby, and Frank Doherty led the recruitment process with approval from David Humphreys. They chose McNamara over high-profile outside candidates such as Felipe Contepomi, Ronan O’Gara, Scott Robertson, and Jamie Joseph. While those names generated significant interest, none had prior experience within the Leinster setup.
McNamara’s appointment addresses timing issues that would have affected other candidates. Contepomi, for instance, could not have taken the job until after the 2027 World Cup. Selecting McNamara allows for a smoother transition before the upcoming season, which may include URC rounds played before or during the World Cup.
The new coach follows a lineage of unproven head coaches installed by the province. Michael Cheika, Joe Schmidt, and Leo Cullen all took the job without prior professional head coaching experience. McNamara is the fourth in this sequence of three of the last four hires who lacked that background. The role demands managing a 45-player squad, supporting the Irish national team, and overseeing the academy, schools, and club pathways.
McNamara’s path to Leinster began at University College Limerick, where his thesis supervisor PJ Smith identified his coaching potential. Smith recommended him to Glenstal Abbey and Clongowes Wood College. At Clongowes, McNamara coached the Under-13s for two seasons and the Senior Cup team for eight, guiding the school to a Leinster Schools Senior Cup victory in 2011 with captain Tadhg Beirne.
His career progressed through Irish schools coaching, the Ireland under-20s, and a stint with North Harbour. He led Ireland to an Under-20 Grand Slam in 2019. After returning to the Leinster academy, he spent four years in France, joining Bordeaux Bègles as an attack coach under Yannick Bru. During his tenure, the team won the Champions Cup two seasons ago and defended the title last May by defeating Leinster in Bilbao.
McNamara had a contract with Bordeaux Bègles until 2029 but moved to Dublin to accept the new challenge. His family, wife Sinead and their three daughters, will return to Ireland after four years in France. The move concludes a period of transition for the province as it prepares for the upcoming competitive calendar.
