Aston Villa has a chance to finish first in the 36-team Champions League table after Tuesday’s match at Camp Nou. The club is currently positioned to take the top spot, depending on results from other matches in the competition. This outcome would mark a high point for a team that has risen rapidly in European football over the last two seasons.

Manager Unai Emery makes his first return to the stadium since March 2017. He was in charge of Paris Saint-Germain when Barcelona overturned a 4-0 first-leg deficit to win 6-1 in the quarter-finals. Emery noted that the match taught him a great deal during his 22 years of coaching. He has won two European trophies since that night, despite facing Barcelona 30 times as a manager with a record of three wins and 21 losses.

Emery described the upcoming fixture as a huge challenge. He said the team has prepared by discussing their previous European experiences. “These games gave me experience to learn, to get better, to intensify for the next matches I face,” Emery told reporters. The manager emphasized that Villa is facing one of the favorites to win the competition.

Captain John McGinn joined Emery at the pre-match press conference. McGinn said he has only visited Camp Nou once before, when he was eight years old on holiday. That visit coincided with the unveiling of Ricardo Quaresma for Barcelona. McGinn praised the work ethic of the Barcelona squad and said Villa has the players to cause problems.

The stadium is undergoing renovations. Hoardings and rubble surround the site, but the interior is taking shape. Barcelona is expected to start without Dani Olmo, Andreas Christensen, Eric García, and Xavi Espart. These absences could create defensive vulnerabilities for the home side.

For Villa, Nicholas Jackson is expected to start after playing the full 90 minutes in their previous match. The team plans to press aggressively and use their physical advantages. This approach aims to disrupt Barcelona’s possession-based style.

The match arrives after a week of debate in English football. Jamie Carragher recently suggested that a fixed hierarchy exists in the Premier League, placing Aston Villa below Manchester United. Emery’s return to Barcelona offers a practical test of that theory. Villa’s current standing in Europe challenges the notion that the club’s status is static.

The game kicks off Tuesday evening. It is the first leg of their Champions League group stage encounter. Villa’s performance will determine their position in the new league format table.
