Dublin residents attended a packed concert at the 3Arena on Monday night for the first leg of Macklemore's Free Palestine tour. The event marked the US rapper's return to the city six weeks after he was removed as the support act for Ed Sheeran. The show featured a roster of guest performers, including Kneecap, Hozier, and Beoga, transforming the venue into a platform for advocacy.

More than 2,500 artists have signed a pledge to boycott Israel in Ireland, a movement that contextualizes the recent controversy surrounding the Sheeran tour. Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, has become a central figure in this high-profile advocacy. The crowd in the 3Arena was filled with Palestine flags and keffiyehs, signaling strong local support for the cause.

Macklemore addressed the audience regarding the tour's name. He stated that the words "Free Palestine" are threatening to some people. He noted that these words have become more divisive than the suffering that necessitated them. The performance style of the evening was designed to reach a wide audience, including fans of pop and rap who may not have been previously engaged in the political discourse.

Hozier performed one of the evening's key moments, singing The Prayer of Sheil. The song was written in the 19th century by John Sheil, a man from Drogheda. The performance was moving and served as a cultural anchor for the night. Kneecap brought high energy to the stage, choreographing mosh pits and moving dynamically against a rich visual backdrop on the screens.

Beoga, an Irish act that left Sheeran's tour in solidarity with Macklemore, played earlier in the program. Eamon Murray, the band's bodhrán player, commented on the band's appearance on The Late Late Show the previous Friday. He claimed that Alan Shatter and Graham Linehan were very upset with the band's presence on the show. The performance highlighted the local connections within the international lineup.

Visual elements on the large screen included pre-gig advertisements for pro-Palestinian organizations and footage from the country. The screen also broadcast messages from actors Mark Ruffalo and Cynthia Nixon, as well as musician Julian Casablancas. A performance by the Al Hurriyah Gazan children's choir was also shown, adding a layer of international connection to the event.

Palestinian pop artist Lina Makhoul opened the night with a wordless song consisting of non-lexical vocables. The performance served as a poignant start to a night filled with speeches and musical contributions. Additional appearances included rappers Dead Prez and DJ Habibeats. The stage crew efficiently managed the logistics, adjusting the setup for each new performer throughout the evening.

Macklemore performed last, taking time between songs to gather himself. He debuted a new song titled Where is Our Love? during the set. The track follows his 2024 release Hind's Hall and continues his musical focus on the Palestinian cause. The concert concluded with the rapper bringing the night to a close, marking a definitive end to the six-week period since his dismissal from the Sheeran tour.
