The New York Islanders defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in overtime on Thursday night, securing their first win in extra time this season. The victory in St. Paul ended the Wild’s home winning streak and marked the first time the Islanders had beaten a team after trailing early in the game. The result stands out as the team’s most complete performance since the start of the regular season.
The Islanders entered the third period tied 2-2 but held an 8-3 advantage in high-danger chances at five-on-five. This statistical edge reflected their defensive structure, which limited Minnesota’s star players from dominating possession. The game remained tight until the final minutes, with both teams exchanging goals in the closing minutes of regulation.
Matthew Schaefer scored the deciding goal in the overtime period. He capitalized on a two-on-one rush to put the puck past the netminder. The goal came shortly after the start of the extra period, as Schaefer did not need to complete a full shift to record the point. This was his first goal of the game, which he scored late in the first period to tie the score 1-1.
Adam Pelech provided a secondary assist on Schaefer’s overtime goal. Pelech had earlier scored the Islanders’ third goal in the third period. The play began with Victor Eklund winning a puck battle along the boards. The puck drifted to Pelech in open space, and his shot struck Michael McCarron in the leg before deflecting past Wild goaltender Jesper Wallstedt. The goal put New York up 3-2 with 7:14 remaining in regulation.
Matt Boldy tied the game 3-3 with 3:53 left in the third period. The Wild forward scored on a rush after the Islanders committed two consecutive penalties. This goal salvaged a point for Minnesota and forced the game into overtime. Boldy’s goal was the third of the night for the Wild, matching the Islanders’ tally.
Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin allowed three goals in the loss. He was tested early by Joel Eriksson Ek, who scored from 41 feet out 27 seconds into the game. Quinn Hughes later tied the game at 2-2 with a sharp-angle backhand. Sorokin’s performance followed a start where he allowed six goals against the Dallas Stars. The Islanders will now return home for a stretch of games against the Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, and New Jersey Devils.
Ryan Pulock left the game with an upper-body injury after playing two shifts and 51 seconds. The Islanders’ penalty kill was perfect, stopping all three of the Wild’s power plays. The team’s defensive approach kept the game low-scoring until the late stages, limiting rush chances for both sides.
