President Donald Trump replaced Susie Wiles with Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff on Friday. The change follows a midterm election in which Democrats secured major gains in Congress. Miller, a senior adviser, takes over the role that coordinates the president's daily agenda and political strategy.
Miller has served as a key architect of the administration's immigration enforcement. He led the push for Operation Midway Blitz, a crackdown focused on the Chicago area. During the campaign for his promotion, Miller argued that the United States must expel cartels, criminal migrants, and gangs to ensure America belongs to Americans only.
Reacting to the announcement, Rep. Jonathan Jackson, a Democrat representing Illinois' 1st District, called Miller a very dangerous man. Jackson noted that the move signals a combative posture from the White House as Democrats take control of both chambers of Congress. He stated that he expects Miller to execute policy aggressively during the remaining 730 days of the administration's term.
Sen. Juliana Stratton, a newly elected Democrat from Illinois, described Miller as the architect of repugnant actions. She wrote that Trump is doubling down rather than changing course. Miller responded on social media, stating that the mission is now clearer than ever. He pledged to fight with all of his soul to support the president and defend the republic.
Trump said he wanted to make a change because Miller has performed well. The president acknowledged that Wiles had done a great job but noted that life sometimes requires new moves. The transition places a known advocate for strict immigration policies directly in charge of the White House operation.
