In Columbus, former U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown defeated incumbent Republican Jon Husted to reclaim his Ohio Senate seat. The Associated Press called the race for Brown at 11:12 p.m. on November 2, with 87 percent of votes reported.
This contest marked the most expensive U.S. Senate race in Ohio history. Campaigns and outside groups spent more than $500 million. Brown had previously served three terms in the Senate before losing to Bernie Moreno in 2024. Husted held elected office for many years before his 2025 appointment to replace Vice President JD Vance.
Brown enters the race with high name recognition, while Husted faced ads linking him to President Trump and the One Big Beautiful Bill. Those ads highlighted cuts to Medicaid and labeled Husted the face of data centers in Ohio. In response, Husted’s campaign portrayed Brown as part of the political establishment, citing a record Republicans called liberal on taxes and immigration.
Although Trump won Ohio by 11 points two years ago, Brown outperformed the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate. He lost to Moreno by fewer than four points in that election. Brown will serve the remainder of Vance’s term and must decide by 2028 whether to run for a full six-year term. He is the seventh senator to win back a seat after losing re-election since 1946.
When Brown returns to Washington in January, he joins a group of Democratic senators who have replaced Republicans. This shift further weakens the Republican majority in the chamber.
