A new plug-in hybrid option is now available for the Skoda Superb in Ireland, marking the final update before the model faces potential retirement. The vehicle combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 40kW electric motor to produce 272 horsepower. This configuration allows the car to travel up to 134 kilometers on electric power alone.
Drivers who tested the vehicle found that real-world conditions in wet and chilly weather yielded an electric range of between 100 and 110 kilometers. With a full battery and a full fuel tank, the Superb can cover a combined distance of approximately 700 to 750 kilometers. On longer journeys where the battery is depleted, fuel economy typically averages between 6.0 and 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
The addition of the 19kWh lithium-ion battery reduces the cargo capacity of the boot. The storage space drops from the standard 645 liters to 485 liters. The vehicle supports 50kW DC fast charging, which allows owners to replenish the battery quickly during long trips. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.1 seconds.
The Superb has been sold in Europe since 2002. It started as a larger version of the Volkswagen Passat and became a staple for taxi drivers and police forces due to its reliability. The model is now considered a niche option as consumer preference shifts toward SUVs. The Skoda Kodiaq, an SUV, ranks as the sixth-best-selling car in Ireland in 2026.
Prices for the Superb have increased significantly over its 24-year production run. The entry-level price now starts at €49,975. The specific Sportline test model, equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels and black exterior trim, costs €57,134 as tested. This price includes an adaptive suspension package that costs €1,094. The base annual motor tax is €180 based on emissions of 32 grams per kilometer.
The interior features a standard 10.4-inch touchscreen and three rotary controllers for managing climate, audio, and driving modes. The rear seats offer ample legroom, making the vehicle suitable for long-distance travel. The cabin uses synthetic suede and imitation carbon fiber accents. A 13-inch touchscreen is available as an upgrade but is not standard on the tested vehicle.
Skoda has indicated that the next generation of the Superb may be replaced by a larger Octavia model. This new Octavia is not expected to reach the market until around 2030. Until then, the current Superb remains on sale. The decision to end the Superb line is driven by declining sales of traditional saloon cars across Europe.
The vehicle is built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Passat. The Passat is slightly cheaper in its base form but more expensive in its sporty R-Line version. The Skoda Superb offers a different interior finish compared to its Volkswagen counterpart. The new plug-in hybrid system is currently available only in the saloon body style, whereas previous plug-in hybrids were restricted to the estate variant.
The car is finished in Cobalt Blue metallic paint. The Sportline trim includes high-backed bucket seats and a small rear spoiler. The front grille is black and large in design. The steering and suspension are tuned for comfort rather than sportiness. Drivers can adjust the adaptive suspension to its softest setting for a smoother ride. The vehicle is sold as a five-star model by the testing publication.
The Superb remains in production while the automotive industry adjusts to changing market demands. The plug-in hybrid option provides an alternative for buyers who want a large vehicle with lower running costs in urban environments. The model is available for immediate purchase. The next major model change is not anticipated for several years, leaving the current Superb as the final version of its lineage.
