Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the New York City Marathon on Sunday with a time of 2:06:01. The 31-year-old secured the victory inside Central Park, making his final move in the last mile.
Almgren finished 13 seconds ahead of Italy's Yeman Crippa. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho took third place in 2:06:26, edging out Kenya's defending champion Benson Kipruto by one second.
This marks Almgren's first marathon win on the New York course. He is also the first Swedish runner and the first European-born man to win the race since Italy's Giacomo Leone in 1996.
Ireland's Peter Lynch finished 19th with a time of 2:10:03. The 28-year-old from Kilkenny ran within 10 seconds of the leader at the halfway mark, passing the point in 1:04:11. His time fell short of his Irish record of 2:06:08, which he set in London in April.
The women's race saw Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui claim the title in 2:24:36. Jessica McClain of the United States finished second in 2:24:42, beating Kenya's Hellen Obiri by one second. Almgren received $100,000 for his victory, adding to his recent gold medal at the World Half Marathon and his European 10,000m title from August.
The undulating five-borough course in New York is known for challenging conditions that often prevent record-setting performances.
