Medicare open enrollment opens in Columbus; Wellcare exits Ohio
Local agents warn that out-of-pocket costs are rising while rural carriers withdraw from the market.

The Medicare open enrollment period began on October 15 and concludes on December 7. Residents of Columbus and surrounding areas should begin reviewing their options immediately because some of the most competitive plans stop accepting new enrollments around Halloween. Michael Kowal, co-founder of the local agency My Medicare Network, noted that waiting until the deadline can limit a recipient's choices.
Kowal described the past few years as volatile for the industry, though he said the current market shows more stability than before. He explained that several insurance carriers have adjusted their 2027 plans to improve profitability. "It’s carrier specific," Kowal said. "Some carriers last year kind of ripped the Band-Aid off and made some pretty drastic changes (and) are pretty stable for this year. The ones that kicked that can down the road .. this year they're trying to make those changes to catch up to everybody else because they're realizing from a profitability perspective, they're taking on more water than they probably should."
Across the nation, plans are increasing out-of-pocket maximums while reducing ancillary benefits. Kowal said this trend is visible in the local market as well. Carriers are also leaving local markets, a move that has affected rural communities the most. "A lot of the carriers are pulling out of the more rural markets because it's more costly for them to do business in those markets," Kowal said. "There’s smaller networks out there, which makes the contract negotiations more difficult .. or less profitable for the carriers."
Wellcare has dropped its Medicare Advantage plans across all of Ohio. This reduction in available options requires residents to carefully compare the remaining carriers before making a final decision. Kowal advised recipients to review their annual notice of change letters and work with an insurance agent to navigate the rules, which change every year.
The enrollment window remains open through December 7. Kowal urged residents to avoid procrastination to ensure they secure the best available plan before early cutoff dates for specific providers take effect.
