Sugar Rush Columbus lost nearly $10,000 in baking and packaging supplies after a break-in at its storage pod on Saturday night.
The bakery is located at 8114 East Broad St. in Reynoldsburg. Owner Mandy became aware of suspicious activity earlier in the week when a Target employee from the neighboring store reviewed security footage. The cameras showed someone making multiple attempts to pick the lock on the storage pod.
Mandy posted a public service announcement on Facebook on Wednesday regarding the activity. The post included an offer of a free cupcake to anyone who wished to enter the pod. She noted that entering through the door would be less work than breaking into a space filled with plastic bins and seasonal decorations.
The suspects did not attempt to eat the cupcakes. On Saturday night, the storage pod was broken into. Mandy stated in a follow-up Facebook post that the incident left her exhausted, frustrated, and hurt by the damage to her small business.
On Sunday, Mandy provided further details during a Facebook Live broadcast. She said the suspects left several bottles of alcohol at the scene. They also urinated on boxes of decorations and tried on a Grinch costume that was stored in the pod for the upcoming holidays.
Sugar Rush Columbus filed a police report. The business is currently working with the neighboring Target to acquire security footage of the incident. The bakery has asked the community for support during this time and encourages customers to stop by and purchase cookies.
The theft occurred after the initial lock-picking attempts were documented. The loss includes specific baking and packaging materials. The Grinch costume remains part of the holiday inventory in the pod.
