Manchester United fans will hear no easy words from their coach this weekend. Michael Carrick admitted that he has shared the hard reality of the team's current standing with both his players and the club's leadership. The conversation comes as the squad prepares to face Chelsea on Saturday.
The numbers paint a grim picture for the club. United have failed to win in their last eight matches. The team currently sits in 16th place in a 20-team league. They hold just one point above the relegation zone. This position puts immediate pressure on Carrick, who kept his job after a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth last Sunday.
Carrick said he spoke with Jason Wilcox, the director of football, and Omar Berrada, the chief executive, earlier this week. He described those talks as necessary but not pleasant. "It's pretty clear, it's not always rosy and nice conversations between anyone," Carrick said. "It's the truth, it's the hard truth at times and it's what we need to move forward."
The mood in the stadium last Sunday was mixed. Supporters cheered Carrick as he jogged around the pitch after the final whistle. However, they booed the players as they entered the tunnel. Carrick said the group is hurt but remains eager to improve. He emphasized that he stands with his players in this downturn. "I'm with the players 100% and we're all in it together," he noted.
Carrick rejected the idea that he is separate from the squad. He stated that the club and the supporters must move through this period as one unit. He believes the team will become stronger once they overcome the current slump. "That's my group, my players and this is my football club so we have to all be in it together," he explained.
Outside criticism has also mounted. Gary Neville recently questioned the professionalism of certain United players on a podcast. Neville claimed some players do not sleep or eat properly. Carrick responded to these comments with a laugh. "Gaz says a lot of things," Carrick said.
The team now turns its attention to the next fixture. The outcome at Chelsea will determine the immediate trajectory of the season for the 16th-ranked side.
