Manchester United lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, suffering its seventh defeat in the last 13 Premier League games.
The match concluded the second half with Chelsea taking the lead in the 50th minute. Morgan Rogers scored after receiving a pass from Noni Madueke, who had stolen the ball from United’s midfield. United’s defense offered little resistance as Rogers moved through the center and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United entered the match with high hopes after a strong first-half performance. They controlled possession and created several chances, including shots from Amad Diallo and Mateus Cunha. However, poor finishing and defensive errors prevented them from taking the lead. Chelsea struggled for control during the first 45 minutes, with Wesley Fofana making several mistakes that nearly resulted in goals for the visitors.
The momentum shifted in the second half when Lisandro Martínez was sent off. The Argentine defender elbowed Wesley Fofana during a corner kick. Martínez had already received a yellow card earlier in the match. Referee Peter Bankes reviewed the incident via video assistant referee before showing the red card. Cole Palmer then converted the resulting penalty in the 64th minute to secure the 2-0 victory.
The result places Chelsea in fourth place in the league standings. Manchester United’s manager, Michael Carrick, faced intense scrutiny following the loss. Supporters in the away end chanted against owner Glazer family and questioned technical director Jason Wilcox’s decisions. Carrick was applauded as he left the pitch, while players received boos.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made key tactical changes, starting Estevao Willian on the right flank. The young winger was dangerous throughout the match, creating several threats despite an injury to João Pedro. Alonso’s adjustments helped Chelsea recover from a disjointed first half.
Manchester United is scheduled to play Roma on Tuesday. The club faces potential managerial changes before that match, with speculation growing over Carrick’s future. The team’s defensive frailty and missed opportunities were evident in the final scoreline.
