Dave Grohl told Jimmy Kimmel that he recognized Taylor Hawkins as a future best friend the instant they shook hands backstage in 1997.
The two musicians first crossed paths during the festival circuit surrounding the release of their respective debut records. Grohl noted that Foo Fighters and Alanis Morissette were both promoting their first albums around the same time. This scheduling coincidence led to shared appearances at radio shows and live festivals. It was at one of these events that the then-unknown drummer approached the band.
Grohl described Hawkins as a blond, surfer-type individual who walked up to him with high energy. The drummer told Grohl that he loved the band and thought they were awesome. That brief interaction sparked an immediate connection for the frontman. Grohl recalled thinking on the spot that the two would be best friends for the rest of their lives. Hawkins officially joined the Foo Fighters in March 1997. He made the move after leaving Alanis Morissettes band that same month. The timing aligned with the final production stages of the Foo Fighters second album, The Colour and the Shape.
Hawkins passed away in 2022 at the age of 50. His death occurred just hours before the band was scheduled to perform in Colombia. In March of this year, Grohl spoke with MOJO magazine about the emotional impact of losing his bandmate. He stated that the loss made him question everything about life. Grohl called the situation unfair and said it threw their world upside down. He admitted he still has a hard time making sense of the event.
The fourth anniversary of Hawkins death passed this month. Friends and fans paid tribute to the drummer during that time. Photographer Sarah Jeynes shared a series of images from her archive. The collection included photos from her first meeting with Hawkins in 2005. These images highlighted the enduring friendship between the two artists.
Grohl’s recent interview on The Jimmy Kimmel Live show revisited those early days of the band's formation. He emphasized how quickly the bond formed between the two men. The conversation served as a retrospective on the origins of one of rock music's most enduring friendships.
