Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields have released their first new song in 17 years.

The pair, who form the band Dead Man's Bones, dropped the single Lost in the Night on October 26. The track arrives alongside a black and white music video featuring Rain Spencer and Noah Jupe. This release marks the end of a long creative hiatus for the group.

The band was formed in 2005 by the actor and the writer producer. They issued their self titled debut album in 2009. That record blended gothic folk, indie rock, and doo wop with horror sounds. It also included backing vocals from the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir, which was founded by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. Gosling and Shields pushed themselves during those initial recordings by learning instruments with which they had little prior experience. Gosling studied cello and piano, while the duo experimented with various sounds.

For the new track, the duo recorded in a single day at a farm outside Los Angeles. They used two guitars, two drum machines, and two synthesizers to create the song. Gosling remains an active participant in the band, contributing both vocals and instrumental performance. The new work continues the collaborative nature of the project, which has been a genuine partnership between the two men since its inception.

Eva Mendes, Gosling's partner, shared personal details about the song's history on Instagram. She identified Lost in the Night as her new favorite song. Mendes revealed that Gosling sang the track to her in 2012, during the production of The Place Beyond the Pines. She stated that she asked him to record it at that time and noted that the melody had haunted her since then. This personal connection adds a layer of history to the release, linking the new music to a specific period in the actor's film career.

The duo has indicated that additional material is coming soon. However, they have not yet confirmed a new album or any live performance dates. The release of this single serves as the initial step in their musical resurgence after nearly two decades of silence.
